SPRING CLEANING

SPRING CLEANING

Spring has arrived.

Now that we are in a new season, it is time to take a few moments and clean out your wardrobe to make way for all of the florals and summer clothes you will be wearing. A few things that I like to do every spring is to clean out and put away all of my winter clothes. Since moving to our new house, I have not had to store it in some dark locker in the basement of our apartment building, but instead keep my winter wear tucked neatly away in the back of the closet or in the laundry room (ours is quite large).

I also make sure that I get my suede shampooed and clean to get rid of the salt and mud from the winter snow melt. It is a good way to ensure that it will last longer as well. We are doing a post later this week on shoe repair so look for that for more information on proper shoe care.

A few other tips:

Get rid of all of the clothes that you are no longer wearing. While you are already cleaning out your closet, it is the perfect time to re evaluate the pieces that you still wear. For example, I have a lot of dresses that I know that I will never wear again (think prom dresses from high school that you just have not had the heart to part with yet). Someone else will love them just as much as you do so it is time to let them go and make way for all of your spring clothes.

Within these clothes you want to get rid of, organize them into toss, donate and sell. Clothes that are still in wonderful shape can be donated to have a second life with a new owner. If they are frayed or too worn, just throw them out. The donation center will throw them away anyways so you might as well save the extra weight of dragging them there. If you really feel that you are going to sell the clothing or make an effort to, you can make a sell section as well.

Organize all of the clothing that you have left into sections. I usually make one section for dresses, one for skirts, one for jumpsuits, shirts, and pants. Then organize within the sections before you put everything back. It makes it so much easier when you are trying to get ready quickly in the morning.

Invest in supplies to get your life organized. Good hangers and boxes can go a long way in getting your closet organized. Now that you are an adult, it is a good idea to invest in some supplies that will get you organized. Ultimately, this is going to be what works best for you so look at different options and figure out the style and type that best suit your needs.

For clothes that you are storing and may need additional care (think sweaters with their pilling), store them in canvas boxes to allow the material to breath. Some that we really like are located here. Another option is to place one to two sheets of tissue paper between the layers of the fabric if it is folded to prevent the colors from running or to place tissue in the sleeves and bodice so that it will keep its shape.

Bring drinks and a friend. The entire process will be much more enjoyable. (Note: hats not required). Also make snacks. We suggest a nice spring salad and if I ever get around to it, something from our Paleo French cook book. We do not always eat paleo, it just sounded like a good idea and I had the best idea for a title.
