SCIENCE FRIDAY: Cruelty Free Beauty
Make up is by nature made of many chemicals. They can be good for your skin, protect it from UV irradiation or stimulate collagen renewal. But, what is good for human skin is not always good for animal skin. For example, the pH of a dog's skin is not the same as ours so we are not to use human shampoo on them. So why then do we test skin care products on animals?
There are a few reasons that we do it. The first and largest one is that most people do not want to take the risk of testing an unknown chemical on their skin. It could be dangerous or have severe side effects. What if it permanently dyes your skin orange? Or causes an allergic reaction that scars?
These are side effects we have to know before a product goes to market so companies test on the next best thing available, an animal. Not all companies choose to perform animal testing. Some try to be more socially conscious and instead, test informed human participants. The difficulty is that certain countries, like China, require animal testing if they are going to market the product in that country. For this reason, you make see products that are labeled "Cruelty Free" except where required by law.
We decided to make a list of 3 companies that are truly cruelty free. They never test on animals and do not market their products in countries where it is required by law to test on animals.
This company was founded on the West Coast and is dedicated to an earth conscious life. All of their products are vegan and cruelty free. They have a full range of skin care, fragrances, and make up available. Everything is also incredibly well priced and worth the investment for. You can click and enjoy a few of our favorites:
They have been praised by blogs and Allure alike. This cruelty free skin care company makes incredible shades that wear well over the day. Each of their pigments lasts through whatever events you have going on. The illuminator will give you the perfect summer glow and the artist palette can be created in the perfect colors to match your skin (they even have a free skin tone matching session). Vapour also offers products that are carmine free such as the concealer, featured below.
Made in Israel from elements of the Dead Sea salt and mud, none of their products are tested on animals or contain any animal products. I particularly love their mud mask and renewal facial peel. They leave your skin feeling incredibly pure and radiant. The age control anti fatigue eye cream is also perfect after a long and stressful day so that you always look your best. The daily moisturizer is perfect and contains SPF to ensure you are protecting your skin and keeping it hydrated every day.
All three of these companies do wonderful work for cruelty free skin care and demonstrate that beauty can be both luxurious and sustainable and Earth conscious.
