FRIDAY FEATURE: Cold Weather Must Haves

FRIDAY FEATURE: Cold Weather Must Haves

James and Tot

Since we addressed the cruise needs for those lucky enough to be traveling and escaping the weather yesterday, today we are focusing on the rest of the time/population that is trapped in a deep freeze. There are a few things we recommend to get you through those cold winter days. Click the photos or the underlined and highlighted text for where to purchase each piece.

Moisturizer

Once the weather gets cold, especially bitterly cold like it has been, your skin is going to dry out quickly. The key to protecting your skin is a great moisturizer. We featured a few that we love on the blog before here, but it is also something that is specific to your skin. If you have oily skin, look for moisturizers that are oil free. If you have incredibly dry skin (like I do), add a nourishing and hydrating serum to your routine 2-3 times per week. Pay attention to how your skin feels. It is a great guide for what you should be doing with your skin care routine.

A Cozy Hat

Your ears are going to be cold after all, right? Might as well bundle up in a comfortable hat to keep in the heat while you make your way to work or school. I typically shy away from viscose linings or cheaply made wool or cotton hats because they are so much more likely to cause static in your hair. Look instead for natural fibers to prevent the all day frizz that just won't quit.

A Cute Hat

Sometimes, you want to look adorable and fierce all in one and on these days, a comfortable stocking cap just will not do the trick. One hat that is both warm and very on trend this season is the woolen beret. Look for natural wool fibers or cashmere blends for an elegant addition to any winter wardrobe.

Moisturizer

I feel I made my point earlier but we have to consider more than the face in the winter. Your hands and other areas of your body are also exposed to the elements. Not to mention, it is drier inside as well leading to ashy skin. Protect your skin with a great moisturizer. We recommend La Roche Posay's Lipikar Lait. It has been featured on the blog before and it is perfect for the dry winter months. Shop here. For those of us blessed with incredibly dry skin, there is a more intensive balm version with shea butter available here

A Good Book

We are currently reading Bleak House but there is nothing better than cozying up inside on a cold day with a warm drink and a great book. Bleak House was originally a serial published by Charles Dickens in 1852 - 1853. Intended as a satire of the English Judicial system, the book focuses on the case of Jarndyce versus Jarndyce and lead to a reform of the very system it criticized in the 1870s. With a female heroine at the helm in Esther Summerson, it is a wonderful winter read. Pick it up at your local book store or at our local book store, Magers and Quinn, here.

An Incredible Blanket

While you are snuggled up inside on a cold winter day, you are going to need an amazing blanket to keep you warm. We recommend Faribault Woolen Mills for their amazing wool products. The Minnesota based company knows a thing or two about making warm blankets and these will not disappoint.

Moisturizer

Again, this is the key to healthy skin in the winter. If you are looking for something more intensive for your hands and feet, we recommend Kiehl's ultimate strength hand salve. It provides and added boost for the areas of your body most exposed to the elements. You can pick it up here

Cute Essential Boots

It is not easy to trudge through the snow in your amazing new Stuart Weitzman boots so invest in a great pair of winter boots that are stylish and warm. There are so many companies that make great winter boots. A few key things to look for are a rubber sole, to keep you dry when the snow is melting off your boots as you walk into work or school, and a thick lining to keep you warm inside the rubber. Rubber is not a good insulator. Your feet will get cold if there is no lining. However, this can be mitigated with a great pair of wool socks which you can pick up here

What Do You Meme game

When you are trapped inside on a cold day or if you are looking for a great game to play with friends, What Do You Meme has been the seasons most popular party game. It is a mix between Cards Against Humanity and memes so you already know it is perfect for us millennials.  It may not be the most appropriate to play with family (depending on how they handle Cards Against Humanity. My family played it without our grandmother but it certainly is not going to work in all families). Pick yours up here. There are even expansion packs now which you can pick up here and here. And if you’re feeling particularly feisty, you can always use your personal photos to the mix (I had my phone handy and the results we uproarious laughter at my friend’s expense...and eventually mine).

Tinted Chapstick

When you are moisturizing the rest of your body, do not forget about your lips. They are also exposed to the elements and likely to get very dry during the winter months. Now more than ever, you will be subject to peeling lips and dry cracking. Moisturizer with a great chapstick or lip balm. To add a little bit more color, opt for a tinted chapstick like Clinique's chubby stick. The feel is amazing and it offers great color.

Moisturizer

Have we gotten the point across yet with the moisturizer? It is incredibly dry outside. Hydration and moisturizer are the key to a glowing winter complexion.  Just do it consistently to protect your skin.

All of these essentials are sure to make sure you are going to moisturized, glowing and warm throughout the cold winter months. Just keep dreaming of the warmer weather to come and take time to enjoy all of the wonderful things that winter has to offer, like ice skating and legitimate excuse for hot chocolate.
